Will a gluten free diet help me to lose weight?

1 Answer

Many people have food intolerances. Food intolerances are often seen when people eat the same foods over and over again. Gluten is an ingredient in many of common foods that Americans eat on a daily basis, so there is a possibility that one can become intolerant to that ingredient.

When one is intolerant to a certain type of food, plainly said, there is inflammation of the gut. When the gut is inflamed, the immune system is kicked on to reduce the inflammation, which can release cortisol due to the stress that is being placed on the body. Cortisol, the stress hormone, has been linked with weight gain and belly fat. Also, while the immune system is kicked on for long periods of time, strength gains can be reduced. To lose weight, one must increase lean body mass. Therefore, inflammation of the gut can reduce the ability to gain lean muscle and potentially lose weight.

By taking certain blood tests, one can figure out what foods they are intolerant to. After determining this, creating a diet that cuts out certain foods will help reduce inflammation, increase lean muscle and lose fat. Gluten free diets are popular because there is so much gluten in an American diet, however not everyone is intolerant to it. My suggestion would be to discuss food intolerances with your doctor, naturopath, or dietician and determine what type of diet is right for you.
